I Don't Need You, I Have Wi Fi

The other night, I went to a Nev (aka BAE) Schulman's book signing for his new book, In Real Life.  In the book and at the signing, he spoke about how we spend so much time communicating via our phones, or using our phones too much when we are actually with other human beings.  This all made me stop and think about how much I'm texting, Instagramming, Tweeting, and so on.  It's sad, because we really do miss out on the face-to-face interaction that used to be necessary because there were no cell phones.  We're all guilty of it.  In my classes at FIT, when we have breaks or when we are waiting for our class to start, every single person is on his/her phone and not talking to any of the 20 others in the room who are doing the exact same thing.

Who's to blame?  We all have this "I don't need you, I have wi-fi" attitude.  We feel like we don't need to speak to others, IRL (in real life) because we have our phones to hide behind.  Forget about making friends in class, just scroll through your Instagram feed or attend to one of your 3 group texts that has been making your iPhone buzz off the hook.

As much as I am obsessed with Instagram and such, I wish that it was easier to turn it all off sometimes and just focus on who we are with in the moment.
